TIPS FOR WRITING EFFECTIVE LETTERS
Tips for Writing Effective Letters
1. Keep it short and to the point – usually about 150-250 words (check their policy). 2. Target your letter to your audience (to sway them), not to your opponents. 3. DON'T mention any race or people group! This is about "illegal activity" – NOT race. 4. Your first sentence should be a strong, catchy statement about the issue at hand. 5. Try to refer to an article or letter or event covered by the newspaper. 6. It's good to be clever, but don't be abusive – attack the issue, not the person. 7. Remember that some readers don't know the events surrounding the issue – tell them. 8. Use facts and figures whenever possible (see USEnglish.org and NumbersUSA.com). 9. Close with a restatement of your position or concise comment. 10. Read your first draft to someone that you trust to get their first impressions. 11. Don't try to be a professional – just say what you want to say and send it! 12. PROOFREAD your letter for correct spelling and grammar. 13. Include your name, full address and daytime phone number – they WILL call you. 14. Sign your letter as an individual, not as a member of CFLI. 15. If you have a title or position that is relevant or significant, include it after your name. 16. Keep in mind that you are allowed about one letter per month, per paper. ADDITIONAL OPTIONS 17. Revise your letter and send it to each of the Village Board Members. 18. Sign up to read your letter to the Village Board at a scheduled meeting (5-minute time limit).
